LTE Group pays tribute to Sir Tony Lloyd

The MP for Rochdale was a long-standing supporter of The Manchester College, Novus and the Group.

The LTE Group is saddened by the news of the death of Sir Tony Lloyd.

As a leading figure in the political life of Greater Manchester over four decades, Sir Tony was a staunch supporter of our work. He took a keen interest in the potential of prison education to improve the life chances of Novus learners, and offered invaluable support to The Manchester College’s work to develop 21st century facilities for the young people of the city region.

Sir Tony first became a Labour MP in 1983, representing the Stretford constituency for 14 years before serving the people of Manchester Central for a further 15 years. He was appointed a foreign minister between 1997 and 1999, and later became chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

In 2012 he became Greater Manchester's inaugural Police and Crime Commissioner, vacating his Westminster seat. Three years later he was appointed interim mayor for the city region, before returning to Parliament as Rochdale's MP in 2017. He was knighted in the Queen's 2021 birthday honours for parliamentary services.

Sir Tony was a strong and valued friend to LTE Group, and will be sorely missed.
